Welcome to Persimmon Glen!

This site is all about my journey into simplifying my life and making do with what I have. I hope I can help others to take the step  they've been dreaming and thinking about, no matter what 'simplifying' means to them.

For me, it was scaling down the size of my house, getting out in the country and trying to live a  greener lifestyle.
What you'll find here is a blog about my new life, some great books, links I hope you'll enjoy, and maybe a new friend...
A new chapter of my life started about a year ago. My sons are all grown up and gone and I found myself living in and maintaining a  2000 sq ft home for just me and my pets. I had always wanted my own place in the country but had stayed in town to be convenient for the boys sports activities and friends.
One day I realized there was nothing stopping me except myself. Prince charming wasn't going to come along and help me and I don't have any rich relatives about to kick the bucket, so I put my place up for sale and starting looking at land. My idea was to find something really cheap and have it paid for a soon as possible, build as I go with cash and not be in debt up to my eyeballs for a home. To simplify. To get back to basics.
You see, I've been a single mom for what seems most of my life, working odd jobs here and there to make ends meet and there is no such thing as retirement accounts or pensions for me. The only thing I have is social security, ( if there is such a thing when I turn 65), so I better get my ducks in a row and start thinking about what I'll do in my old age.
I figured if I have some land and a home paid for with a little savings in the bank, then surely I could figure out a way to make a little money each month to keep me in clothes and food even when I'm 70.
It took several months, but my house finally sold and I found my dream piece of land. I've been living here for nine months now and a lot of things have happened in that time.
So this is my journey. Follow along with me and I'll get you up-to-date......

Hey girl loved your site. It Is very incouraging as this is my dream also someday. It's getting pretty tough around here to find a mountain top that the major realtors haven't already bought up.
Loved your little story bout snow cream.LOL Keep up the good work & be safe

Hi Patti, Thanks, I'm glad you like the site. Yes, it's hard to find property anymore. I had to look outside Sevier County to get a good deal, and I love it here. Now, if I want to go do the tourist thing I can, without having to live in it.
The main reason I'm doing this site is to try and encourage others to get out there and just do it! You don't have to have tons of money, but you do have to determination. That's the main thing!

Hi, I'm Gwen and I like your website. I found your link on the 'Mother Earth News' comments forum about composting toilets. It seems we have some things in common, you and I... a desire to live simply in a smaller space with a smaller footprint, but definitely not with a smaller life. I keep an ongoing blog of my journey at idratherbe-ginger.blogspot.com. I am very much looking forward to digging in and reading your posts. Peace. Thanks!
